Judgment of the Supreme Court concerning segregation of Romani children at the primary school in a village Muránska Dlhá Lúka
The Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic on 12 July 2023 upheld the appeal of our NGO against the judgment of the Regional Court in Bratislava, which in October 2021 upheld the judgment of the first instance, which in February 2020 dismissed the public lawsuit initiated under the Anti-Discrimination Act against the Slovak Republic represented by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic. The Supreme Court ruled that by educating Roma children in an ethnically homogeneous school close to a local disadvantaged Roma community, the Roma children were discriminated against on the basis of ethnicity. It upheld the responsibility of the defendant State, represented by the Ministry of Education, which, according to the Court, had failed to take sufficient preventive measures to protect against discrimination and to eliminate it.
