This book presents ten stories of Roma women and men who experienced discrimination or other violations of their rights because of their ethnic origin and decided to defend themselves. They used the available legal tools and, with the support of our non-governmental organization, sought justice in courts. They did so despite many obstacles. The people featured in this book defended their rights through means that had been used very rarely in Slovakia. They followed legal paths that were largely unexplored. Their efforts have significance for the whole of society. Their stories are inspiring.

The publication was produced within the framework of the project “Advancing the Human Rights of the Roma Minority through the Use of Legal Protection Mechanisms and in Cooperation with Local Roma Activists.” The project was supported by the ACF – Slovakia programme, funded by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014–2021. The programme operator is the Ekopolis Foundation, in partnership with the Open Society Foundation Bratislava and the Carpathian Foundation.
