Police raid in Moldava nad Bodvou – judgment of the European court in Strasbourg
In June 2013, more than 60 police officers broke into the Roma community in Moldava nad Bodvou and physically attacked about 30 people, including women and children. From the beginning, our NGO Center for Civil and Human Rights (Poradňa) provided free legal representation to two injured men who, according to their statements, faced severe violence by police during the raid, as well as at the local police station where they were shown and detained after the raid.
After the injured men did not get justice in Slovakia, we filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
On September 1, 2020, the European court ruled that Slovakia had violated their rights in connection with police violence because the responsible state authorities had insufficiently investigated police violence and its possible racial motive.
You will also find out how one of the victims perceived the police intervention and why it is important to deal with human rights violations in our video, which captures the course of the press conference organized by us for the decision of the European Court.
