In December, our colleagues Veronika and Agáta gave an interview to Denník N about the experiences of Roma women who were illegally sterilized or discriminated against during childbirth in the past—often without being given an explanation for the procedure or giving their actual consent.

Veronika, who herself experienced this violation of her rights, said in the interview:

“But I didn’t know that I was signing up for sterilization and that I would never be able to have children again… They took away our ability to have children.”

This story is one of many that show how the systematic violation of reproductive rights affects women from marginalized communities. It is important to talk about this—not only to remember the past, but also to learn for the future and demand justice and accountability.
