On 23 May 2023, the National Council of the Slovak Republic (Slovak parliament) negotiated in the first reading the draft law on compensation for illegally sterilised Roma women. We welcomed the draft law. However, in our opinion, it also has certain shortcomings, which, among other things, could later complicate the process of compensating aggrieved women once it has been approved.

In the further legislative proces, parliamentary committees, as well as Members of Parliament themselves, may submit proposals for amendments or additions to it. We have therefore drafted and sent comments to the Parliament pointing out the shortcomings of the current draft law and proposing a number of specific amendments to it.

We hope that our comments will be taken into account by the relevant parliamentary committees and by the Members of Parliament and that they will be reflected in the draft law.

Our comments are availabe in Slovak here.
