Opinion of the UN CERD in the case of V. S. v. Slovakia
The Committee of the United Nations (CERD), with its opinion from the 4th December 2015, rendered an opinion regarding the violation of the right to access employment of a Roma woman. The CERD committee considered that the Slovak Republic violated the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by not preventing her from discrimination in her access to employment and failed to ensure adequate legal protection from discrimination. With its opinion, the Committee pointed out the long lasting discrimination of the Roma minority in the Slovak society. At the same time, the Committee emphasized the continuous deficiency in the adjudication process by the courts, which frequently are unable to provide adequate legal remedy to individuals facing discrimination. The CERD committee recommended that the Slovak government express apology to the petitioner and grant her adequate compensation. We represented the applicant in this case in the proceedings before the Committee within our strategic litigatio program.
