The European Court in Strasbourg: Slovakia has seriously failed to investigate police violence against Roma boy
On 28 January 2020, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg announced its judgment in a case A.P. against Slovakia. The Court found violation of the applicant’s right to protection from cruel and inhuman treatment under Art. 3 of the European Convention. The case concerns police violence by municipal police on against Roma boy, which was due in 2015 in one of the Roma marginalised coomunities in Eastern Slovakia. According to the ECtHR, the responsible state authorities have not sufficiently investigated the case, in breach of their international human rights obligations. The ECHR awarded the applicant a financial compensation of EUR 5000. We provided Roma applicant legal represenation in a case within our strategic litigation program.
