In September, the mother of a Roma child from Šarišská Poruba contacted us. Neither she nor the grandmother agreed to reassign the child to a special class at the primary school in Kapušany.

Both of them were aware that after finishing their child would have no chance to continue in a regular secondary school. They suspected that the transfer to the special class was unjustified. That is why, with our legal support, they appealed against the school’s decision. We argued that the child did not belong in the special class and that the school had acted unlawfully in placing him there.

Together with the mother, we subsequently met with the school management, to whom we also communicated our reservations both in a personal meeting and by telephone.

At the end of the year, we received good news from the mother – the school finally decided to transfer the child to a mainstream primary school class.

We see it as positive that the school management has finally reconsidered its decision to educate the child in a special class and the child will continue to be educated in a mainstream class with the necessary support to master the curriculum.

We thank the parents and the child’s grandmother for the trust they have placed in us.

It is important that they chose to stand up for their rights and not take a decision that could have had a negative impact on their child’s future as final.
