In the past, hundreds of Roma women in Slovakia have been illegally sterilised without their informed consent. This gross interference with their reproductive rights has left deep physical and psychological consequences. Despite the government’s apology in 2021, there is still no law on compensation.

We interviewed Roma women who have been harmed by this practice for the @Kapital newspaper about their stories and our collective efforts to achieve justice for women harmed by this practice.

In the report, for example, you will read about the story of Ingrid, who was sterilised at the age of 16 and only learned the truth three years later. “Doctors changed my life without my knowledge,” she says.

Veronika and other activists have been tirelessly drawing attention to this injustice: “We have been fighting for over 20 years and we will not give up.” She says.
