With partner NGOs, we sent a statement to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe pointing to persistent shortcomings in the investigation of cases of police violence
In January 2023, together with our partner organisations the European Roma Rights Centre and the Human Rights Forum, we sent our joint statement to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, in which we point out the insufficient implementation of the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of R.R. and R.D. v. Slovak Republic.
It was this important judgment that the European Court ruled in September 2020 on the violation of the rights of two Roma who faced violence during a police raid in Moldava nad Bodvou in 2013. We in Poradna provided legal assistance to both affected Roma.
In our joint submission, we point out that despite an official apology to all ill-treated Roma from Moldava – the Slovak government has not taken the necessary measures to fully implement this judgment and to address the serious shortcomings in the investigation of both the police violence and its possible racial motive, which the European Court highlighted in its judgment.
We therefore vall on the Committee of Ministers to continue to examine the Government’s implementation of this judgment. At the same time, we suggest a number of measures to be taken by the Government in our submission.
